Shakespeare's plays were very popular and still are to this day.

In total he wrote 38 plays, some of which were tragedy, other comedy, and the rest history.  They were written using Iambic Pentameter, which is a way of writing using syllables usually found in poetry.

Some of Shakespeare's most famous plays are:

Macbeth: The play is still one of Shakespeare's most often performed plays to this day. We watch as the main character (Macbeth) becomes more powerful, using any means necessary to get what he wants. He is pushed onward by his wife's bloodthirsty ambition. However, by the final scene, Macbeth has paid the price and is defeated when a new king, Malcom, comes to power.
Romeo and Juliet: The play is a story of love that ends in tragedy. The two main characters, Romeo and Juliet, love eachother but come from feuding families. Due to the conflict, they cannot be together. Because of the unbearable situation, they end up killing themselves.
The Tempest: The play is about magic, betrayal, love and forgiveness. It is set on an island near Italy where Prospero, his daughter Miranda, the sprite servant Ariel and the wildman slave Caliban live. Prospero, a powerful magician and former Duke of Milan, creates a storm, or tempest, that sets up the play. Later in the play, we see a plot forming to kill the King of Naples, a drunken plan to kill Prospero, and a romance between Prospero's daughter and the King's son. In the final scene, all are forgiven and they set sail home.
